So West Side Mark said he’s thinking about hosting an adults BJJ tourney in September. I’ve been tossing the idea of trying one out and I think the timing is ideal. I’m wanting to ask a couple guys at West Side what their suggestions are for a training regimen. My ideas are to keep up my Sun-Tues schedule of class attendance and do weight and cardio training Thur-Sat with Wednesday being my take it easy day.
I think I’ll vary up the Thur-Sat schedule with some MTBing, hiking, and trail running.
I’m also considering periodically going to other gyms like Unified or Park City to train for more exposure and some different perspectives. If I have fun I’ll stick with it. That’s what keeps me going back to West Side; I’m always leaving with a smile on my face.
Regardless of whether the tournament happens or not I think this will help me establish a solid routine that I can use to gage my progress.
What do you do? Do you do anything at all other than your usual? What is your usual?

I usually ramp up about 4-6 weeks out, making sure I train as often as I can including 5 crossfit classes a week. For me this means also doing jits 7 days a week, sometimes 2x a day. I do this for cardio/strength purposes and weight management. About 1 week out, I slow down the intensity and go to more drilling intensive sessions. The day before (which is sometimes weighin day) I am very chill, at most going to crossfit and maybe relaxing in the sauna or riding the exercise bike for 30 min or so.

Holy jits! BJJ 7x + crossfit 5x a week?!! Right on! Is your week long taper down before the event still 7x a week BJJ?
I’m finally to the point of being able to make it all the way through class without sitting out for breather. I use Turbulence Training for my gym workouts which include cardio and weight training routines. I’m also starting to practice Ginastica Natural exercises every so often.
Thanks for sharing Georgette. This gives me some great ideas!

I just tried to train every single day leading up to the tournament. (around 4 weeks). I also tried to drink less booze and no soda at all. The last week before the tournament I went easy on the rolling so I didnt get injured.
The hard days to train are thurs-sunday.
-Thursday nights (nogi) tend to get me banged up worse than regular jiu jitsu. This would be a good day to mountain bike, etc.
-Friday you got park city or other west side guys potentially. If they fall through mtn bike or exercise some other way.
-Saturday morning at unified is a solid 2 hour workout. (1hr technique, 1 hour rolling). I HIGHLY recommend this.
-Sunday technique and open mat if west side is open.
- Mon-Weds Just regular jiu jitsu

Thanks for sharing man. I don’t know why I didn’t think to ask you in person. You’ve totally dominated your past tournaments.
The Saturday at Unified is new to me. Which class are you hitting? Are you combining the Mixed and Open classes?
I’m gonna spend at least the next 2 months trying to establish a regular routine of Sun-Tues BJJ at West Side and hopefully some Park City Fridays. I want to get at least 2 days in a week weight training/running/MTBing. Come the month before a tournament, I’ll try to kick it in the ass more.
For the summer I gotta be careful. With the kids out of school my wife’s sanity level is walking a fine line.

yeah saturdays at unified: 11AM is mixed, and immediately after that is open mat. They line you up down the mat and roll for a solid hour, switching partners every 5 minutes i think.

Did you get a punch card for Unified?
